This research makes an effort to investigate multifarious roles of urban rivers and riversides in the Persian City of Hamedan at the last years of the Qajarid Era and afterwards until 1930s. This period is a transitional time, from traditionalism to modernism in the history of urbanization in Iran. During these years, a deep spatial change in urban components has occurred. In this qualitative research, the author has applied descriptive and interpretive research strategies to demonstrate historical facts about the role of urban rivers and riversides in Persian urbanization and therelationship between these ecological components and urban society in the old Hamedan amid this transitional time. To collect data, different methods including library-based search and an in-depthsocial survey by a semi-structured interview were used. Next, applying content analysis method, data was carefully classified and analyzed. The findings show that multi-functionality is the most important characteristic of urban rivers and riversides over those years providing diverse social, cultural, economic, and environmental benefits for people. The lessons learned from this study can be reapplied in the current urban development plans in order to adapt urban environments to climate change and at the same time, brings socio-economic benefitsfor citizens in the context of twenty-first century"s urbanization.
